The 150X
effectively doubles the dynamic range (up to a total of 115dB)
of typical wide bandwidth media such as digital systems sampled
at greater than 40kHz and analog tape recorders operating at 15ips
or faster. Type I is the dbx® noise reduction typically found
in music recording studio equipment packages.
The 150X provides two channels each of encode and decode electronics
in a single package, with front panel bypass switches for each
circuit. Front panel calibration trims allow readjustment to custom
studio levels without mistracking.
Although simple in theory, the classic 2:1:2 compander noise reduction
used in the 150X could not be practically achieved before the
development by dbx of two patented circuits, the dbx RMS detector
and dbx Voltage Controlled Amplifier (VCA). The RMS detector enables
optimum decode tracking and transient response despite the phase
shifts typically induced by tape recorders. The dbx VCA provides
precise gain control over an extremely wide dynamic range while
maintaining very low noise and distortion. |
